York In Lockdown – 13 Photos Of A Deserted City Centre
I thought I’d make the first post on this site one that marks a significant moment in our history. York in lockdown due to the COVID-19/Coronavirus global pandemic.
York minus the tourists. All quiet but still alluring.
As the lockdown in York (and England) begins to ease, I’ll share some of the photos I’ve taken in and around the city centre over the past few months.
Table of Contents
York Minster
Riverside
The Kings Arms is probably one of the most photographed pubs in York. It’s the one usually seen on TV whenever the River Ouse floods.
The Bars
No, not pubs, because they’re all closed too 🙁
Walmgate Bar. A usually busy junction at any time of day. Not a vehicle to be seen.
Nature
Nature begins to regain its territory after years of human encroachment. This photo was taken very close to a public footpath in York City centre. I’ve checked on the nest regularly and can happily confirm all the chicks fledged and left the nest.
York’s Streets
Streets that are usually bustling with shoppers are now bereft. Without the crowds, there’s more opportunity to notice and appreciate the architecture.
More empty streets…
The Shambles. The most famous street in York. Dating back to the 14th Century, The Shambles is a magnet for visitors to the city. Rumour has it that it will become a one-way street for pedestrians once lockdown in York is over.
The Parks
Even during the warmer weather, our local parks were deserted.
Please stay safe. Let’s hope we all survive, and our businesses reopen and start to thrive.
As a quick disclaimer: I live in the city centre and volunteer on behalf of the City of York Council and the NHS, helping out those who are most vulnerable during these difficult times. The photos when I’m either en route to help someone or (in the earlier photos) taking my daily permitted exercise.
